The Head Softball Coach serves as the primary leader and steward of the University of Mary's NCAA Division II Softball program. This position provides strategic leadership, personnel supervision, scholarship management, competitive oversight, fundraising direction, and mission integration for the softball program.
The Head Coach is fully responsible for competitive success, culture formation, compliance oversight, and alignment with the University's Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission and the University’s ‘Greatness Through Virtue’ (GTV) whole-person development model.
Candidates will be invited to demonstrate a willingness to support the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:
- Oversees Scholar-Athlete & Team Athletic Success
- Establishing and executing the program's competitive vision and multi-year plan
- Overall record and NSIC performance
- Regional/NCAA DII finish and trajectory
- Recruiting and retaining high-caliber scholar-athletes
- Leading practice design, game preparation, and player development
- Evaluating competitive progress and implementing performance improvement strategies
- Supervising assistant coach in recruiting and player development execution
- Collaborating effectively within the athletic department
- Oversees Scholar-Athlete & Team Academic Success
- Monitoring team GPA and academic benchmarks
- Oversight of academic standing and retention
- Ensuring satisfactory academic progress
- Strategic intervention plans for academically at-risk scholar-athletes
- Maintaining working knowledge of NCAA Division II eligibility requirements
- Setting academic culture expectations for coaching staff
- Oversees Scholar-Athlete & Team Compliance
- Maintaining comprehensive knowledge of NCAA, NSIC, and institutional rules
- Ensuring recruitment, financial aid, and practice regulations are followed
- Meeting all compliance deadlines
- Supervising assistant coach compliance education documentation
- Oversees Scholar-Athlete Leadership & Whole Person Development
- Full integration of the ‘Greatness Through Virtue’ model
- Participation in required formation experiences
- Oversight of PED course enrollment
- Annual and future GTV integration plans
- Development of the virtuous leadership and team solidarity
- Oversees Scholar-Athlete Safety, Health & Well Being
- Oversight of the athletic training integration
- Travel standards and team logistics
- Team policy development and enforcement
- Collaboration with support services
- Review of scholar-athlete exit feedback
- Ensuring equitable experience across both programs
- Oversees Community Integration & Connectedness
- Strategic marketing collaboration
- Social media direction (in coordination with athletics communications)
- Camp development
- Faculty and campus integration
- Game-day tradition and development
- Community presence and engagement
- Oversees Program Management
- Budget management
- Scholarship allocation and strategy
- Roster size targets
- Scheduling
- Staff supervision and evaluation
- Faculty coordination
- Contribution to departmental strategic plan
- Interdepartmental collaboration
- Contribute to Athletic Fundraising
- Meeting or exceeding annual Armada goals
- Maintaining a strong Armada Cabinet
- Participation in flagship fundraising events
- Development of sport-specific fundraising initiatives
- Engagement with alumni and donors
Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Masters’ degree preferred
- A minimum of 3-5 years of previous coaching experience required
- Upholds and promotes the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
- Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
- Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Athletics and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ
Knowledge and Skills include:
- Understanding of the ‘Greatness Through Virtue’ core strategies and being able to facilitate the growth of our Scholar-Athletes in the virtues of academic life
- Must possess a good driving record and pass a background check
- Working knowledge of NCAA rules, standards, practices, and procedures
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication skills
